For series 1-4, Happy Hour designed an animated, paper-cut-out world featuring Paper Dave navigating a landscape filled with challenges emblematic of modern life: mobile phones, spam, social media, and CCTV. From peeling himself out of a paper laptop to walking through a theatre door, the sequence was crafted in CGI as a seamless one-shot animation.
For series 5, the concept evolved to reflect the growing complexity of modern life. The new sequence expanded the visual language with more intricate animations, sharper satirical nods, and updated motifs to match the series’ matured tone. The continuous journey of Paper Dave retained its charm while integrating fresh elements that echoed the latest cultural touchpoints.
