Not ‘just’ another University

Recruiting the brightest under-grads to the University of the West of England (UWE) was a campaign that we were pleased to get behind, because just like UWE we champion curiosity and the power of creativity to make great things happen.

Having developed the TV strategy for this campaign, we built our creative platform ‘Just’ which showcased UWE as a place where ambitions are ignited, appealing to the activism generation and really challenging them to see a UWE course as a path that leads both themselves and the world towards a better future with ‘comfort never changed the world’ .

As the picture slowly became clearer for the UK higher education sector’s future, UWE realised that they needed to get to market quickly – and knowing that Happy Hour are experts in rapid response advertising they set us a challenge to create and produce their recruitment TV commercial in six weeks.

To bring ‘Just’ to screens across the UK, at a time when we couldn’t film due to lockdown could have been a challenge, but we think adversity can be a great way to unlock creativity, and despite the obstacles the team got to work (remotely) and created a branded TV commercial that feels fresh and new, without filming a thing.

The 40 second “Just” TV commercial was created using stock footage. We set to work sourcing interesting, unusual, and unique shots that represented the undergrad, and Bristol, experience including some of our cities recognisable landmarks. Our animators then worked their magic, adding engaging VFX and large text to emphasise key messages and tie the footage together. The sound design created a dynamic, aspirational tone to inspire young people planning their next big steps after school.

“As a Bristol-based creative production company staffed by a fair few proud Bristolians we love a chance to show off what’s great about our city, so we jumped at the chance to create this TV campaign for UWE. The circumstances were far from normal or ideal but I’m really proud of how the team pulled together and adapted, and really proud of the great TV commercial that we’ve produced,” says Tom, Founder and CEO.
