Last week saw one of Happy Hour’s most exciting projects come to fruition, our latest feature film Kicking Off had its London premiere and is now on limited theatrical release, DVD and video on demand. The premiere marks the culmination of years of collaborative work on the film which was shot in London and produced in Bristol at Happy Hour’s full-service production house.
Kicking Off, winner of Best British Feature at Raindance, starts with the most important game of the season. Loyal fans Wigsy and Cliff watch in trepidation as their football team score the goal that will save them from relegation. Victory is bliss as a chorus of supporters chant and cry with elation. However, this frenzy of happiness quickly turns ugly as the referee disallows the deciding goal. With their hearts and fists pumping, adrenalin charging and fury racing through their bloodstream, the fans take matters into their own hands and Cliff makes the fatal mistake of planning while pissed. Wigsy, a confirmed idiot, follows through with said plan and in the darkest hours of the night he commits a crime that will cause chaos and catastrophe for him and his best mate.
Starring Greg McHugh (Fresh Meat, The A Word), Warren Brown (Luther), Alistair Petrie (The Night Manager, Star Wars Rogue One) and Danielle Bux (Silent Witness). It also features cameo appearances from ex-footballers Robbie Savage, Mark Bright and Sir Geoff Hurst. It has been directed by National Theatre Director Matt Wilde, who more recently has been directing for The Kevin Spacey Foundation.
Kicking Off is cleverly filmed with split screen shots and slow motion montages. Fast-paced, witty dialogue from characters best described as lovable rogues who will leave you laughing and grimacing at their lack of common sense. Total Film mention in their review “there is a clear debt to Edgar Wright in this entertaining comedy…”
