COVID: Brands take advantage of ridiculously low media prices

2020, what a year. And we’re only 8 months in! Like many businesses in the UK and around the world, we’ve seen the impact of pandemic and the lockdown, but with people at home more often and low media costs, braver brands are taking advantage and going on air with updated or new TV campaigns.

That’s of course if they can find an agency that can deliver the creative and production in these ‘uncertain’ times. What we’re certain of is that Happy Hour is one of the few creative agencies that can and has been getting new ads on air. Thankfully adversity and uncertainty can be a great way of unlocking creativity, as we recently found with our UWE TV commercial.

Being tasked with producing a TV advert for their undergraduate recruitment campaign, with just a 6 week turnaround time, and without the ability to film was certainly a challenge. One that we rose to, creating a TV commercial composed from stock footage that still feels fresh, new, and exciting.

We learned a lot of lessons during the creation of this TV ad campaign which we’ve carried through to our other productions. Using stock footage with new animation, visual effects, and sound design created a fresh new TV commercial without us having to set foot outside of our front door.

COVID might have forced us to pivot and adapt to new ways of working, but while we miss the old days, we’re actually enjoying our new normal.

How we’ve adapted

Remote working. Every area of the agency is working remotely—but still connected, collaborating and creating every day. In fact, we’ve been just as busy as normal updating existing creative and producing new content.

Testing & Social distancing on set. Thankfully we’re now able to film again, and we were one of the first UK agencies to be back in production by giving 15 minute COVID tests to all crew and talent on entry by our on-set medical professionals. Over the last month we’ve been filming several TV campaigns with social distancing measures in place.

Client collaboration is at the heart of all of our productions. We’ve introduced live streaming so that our clients can be ‘in the room’ with us without having to leave their home, allowing them to see what’s happening on set and collaborate with us in real time. Our voice over recording sessions are now run in a similar way, using video conferencing to bring our clients into the studio with us and the artists.

Mental Health. We’re also keen to go beyond the mandatory rules and regulations. We recognise the mental health of our team is as important as their physical health and safety, and that the full impacts of the pandemic on mental health are still to be seen, so we have trained mental health first aiders.
